Vista Problems
As with migrating to another OS (and one that was only technically released today, mind you), you’re bound to have a fair share of problems and annoyances trying to restore your computer to almost the same state it was before. If you click ‘Read more’, you can view some of those problems and annoyances… or not.
I saw the first 4 episodes of 24 Season 6, I’m fairly certain that just those 4 episodes beats any other entire series of 24. You heard me right. If it can hold the same momentum throughout the series, I think this will be the pinnacle of 24 greatness.
Also in my binge download spree (I upgraded to a 40gb plan on Internode, I used to be on 20gb, hence the massive download mania), I downloaded the first 4 episodes of Prison Break Season 2 (I might add, both these shows have not been aired in Australia yet). While it didn’t top the excitement of 24, I was equally engrossed in them, and can’t wait to get the rest of the series.
Back to work next week… ![]()
Well, Windows Vista… it’s been a fairly easy upgrade but unfortunately, some things just simply wouldn’t work as well as XP.
The main problem I have had is with my sound card. I have a Creative Audigy 2 ZS, and trying to get the bloody thing working with Vista almost drove me up shit creek. The first drivers I downloaded from it (off the Creative site), worked fine except they were set to expire on the 12th of December. Well that day came, and the drivers disabled themselves, and I had no sound. So I went back to the site to find some newer drivers, sure enough, there was a new beta driver out. Download… installed… crashed. That’s right, crashed. The Blue Screen of Death has returned! After around 2 hours of trying to fudge the driver in without it giving me that nasty blue screen, I managed to finally get it working. But I also found out that Ventrilo (voice communication program) stopped working too. Another 2 hours went by. To rub vinegar on the wound, the drivers don’t unlock EAX, which is required for nearly 98% of the games out there in unlocking their audio potential. Sigh.
Some programs also refused to work fully. Vegas (my video editing program) would not open up until I uninstalled one of its features, because it had a problem with Vista. Then again, it also had a problem with XP for God know’s what reason, so it’s not exactly a new problem.
Problems aside, I have had a few annoyances with Vista as well.
3 words. User Account Control. If I ever met the glasses-wearing, pimple-popping, Star-Trek watching nerd(s) which programmed that feature into Vista would be meeting Barry and Larry, my two fists. (Don’t ask me why I name my fists, it’s a running joke between my mates, they’ll get it) It is almost hands-down the most annoying feature programmed into a Windows operating system, and that’s saying a lot. It makes that stupid Clip from Microsoft Office welcome on my computer any day. It’s not that I dislike its purpose, it serves a great purpose in securing your computer, but when it asks you at least 2 questions every time you want to a move a file or folder, it gets intrusive. Nearly every action taken in Windows Vista will spark a question from the User Account Control. And turning it off leaves your computer almost wide-open to exploits again. If they had made it ask less questions and still achieve the same security, it would be a great feature.
One thing which is a bit of a preference more than an annoyance, is that Vista will replace your fonts styles on websites with it’s default font. It’s not that bad since the font default of Windows Vista is alright, but you should still be allowed to customize your page instead of being forced with one font.
I must say though, Vista is an excellent OS. Don’t pass judgement on it just because I whinged. I have to whinge, this is my blog.
